This Ableton Learn Live clip walks through the real-time recording workflow for capturing Session view clips and scenes directly onto the Arrangement timeline. Clicking the Record to Arrangement button starts recording immediately, while Shift-clicking tells Live to wait until you launch a clip or scene before it begins capturing.
Clips and scenes can be triggered in any order during recording, which turns the process into a compositional tool rather than a strict playback capture. Experimenting with different launch sequences lets you discover arrangements you might not have planned in advance.
Pressing Tab toggles between the Session and Arrangement views without stopping the recording, so you can monitor how your arrangement is building while still working in the Session view.
Any device or mixer parameter changes you make during recording are captured as automation in the Arrangement view. Automation already embedded in your Session view clips is also transferred automatically, so the full expressiveness of your session comes through into the linear timeline.
