Switching the volume automation mode to Relative lets you trim a track up or down by a set amount, like adding one dB to a lead vocal, without erasing or distorting the automation curve already in place.
This matters because automation controls the actual fader, so a normal volume nudge would just overwrite your existing moves. Relative mode adds the offset on top instead, keeping every dip and swell you already programmed intact.
