Ableton's overhauled AutoFilter gets a hands-on tour here, applied to a bass track to show off its new spectrum visualizer, which makes it easy to see exactly which frequencies the filter is shaping as you push the resonance around the cutoff point.
Beyond the classic Low Pass, High Pass, Band Pass, and Notch types, the device now includes a Morph mode plus several new filter flavors: a DJ filter modeled on Pioneer mixer curves, a Comb filter for phasey, smeary textures, a Resampling filter for bit-crushed grit, a combined Notch plus Low Pass, and a Valve filter that produces a vocal, talky character.
Switching back to a standard Low Pass, the Drive control adds distortion to the signal, and pushing it too far causes clipping. The new Soft Clip option tames those peaks, and dialing back the wet output level restores balance, with different analog-style filter circuits available to change the flavor of the distortion itself.
