Producer Brian Deck demonstrates two room mic placements for recording a guitar amp, each capturing the acoustic space in a different way. A room mic picks up the amp in its physical environment, adding realism and power that close-miking alone can't provide.
The first position aims the mic past the cabinet from about 8 feet away, capturing the sound of the room while still pointing toward the source. The second points the mic directly at the wall, so it catches only first reflections off the surface, producing a roomy, full quality with no direct signal at all.
Both placements get audio demonstrations, making it easy to hear how each one affects the character of the recorded guitar sound.
