This segment of Ableton's Learn Live series walks through building a layered modulation setup inside Tree Tone, the resonator device from the Inspired by Nature Pack. The presenter routes LFO 1 to the Shift parameter to animate pitch over time, then shapes the effect by adjusting rate, waveform (including Sample and Hold), and syncing to the project clock.
A key detail here is MIDI retrigger: enabling it locks the LFO cycle to incoming note events, which keeps pitch movement rhythmically in step with the groove rather than drifting freely. To avoid those same MIDI notes triggering the resonators, Key To Mallet gets disabled in the Routing section.
Envelope 1 is then routed to the Noise parameter with a bar-length release, adding a burst of texture at the top of each bar. A second LFO running a synced, retriggered square wave is layered on top via the Tuning parameter, adding sharper pitch jumps on a one-bar cycle.
The result is a fully modulated Tree Tone patch built from interlocking parts, each one auditioned in context with a drum beat as it's added. The workflow here transfers to any device with a modulation matrix: sync and retrigger settings are what separate a modulation that feels musical from one that just wanders.
