Ableton's Arrangement View handles automation differently than Session View. Instead of being trapped inside individual clips, automation here can stretch freely across multiple clips along the timeline, giving you more flexibility for sweeping changes over a full section or song.
Hit the Automation Mode button, or just tap A on your keyboard, to switch between viewing track content and viewing the automation layered on top of it. This toggle keeps your workspace clean, letting you focus on performance or automation without clutter.
By default, moving a clip drags its automation along with it, which can throw off carefully timed filter sweeps or volume moves if you're just rearranging song structure. Turn on Lock Envelopes, right next to the Automation Mode button, and clips become free to move while the automation stays fixed in place, decoupling your arrangement edits from your automation work.
