Ableton Live's Take Lanes turn a multi-take recording into raw material for comping, and this bit shows how to get inside them. After recording several passes of a part, pull up the Take Lanes from the context menu or with Cmd/Ctrl+Alt+U to see every take stacked chronologically, most recent at the bottom.
Each lane shows a highlighted section, and that highlight is what actually plays back in the main comp lane above. Understanding this link between the take lanes and the main lane is the key to comping: whatever's lit up down below is what you'll hear on playback.
Before committing to any edits, it helps to audition individual takes to judge which moments are keepers. Clicking the speaker icon on a lane, or just hitting T, lets you preview that take in isolation so you can compare performances before piecing together the best one.”
